H KAY is a blog created by me, Hannah.  I'm a Colorado girl with a love for champagne + coffee + conversation.  Follow along for a look inside my life!

Who doesn't love Odesza!?!  I mean seriously, they are amazing!  I think the neighbors even like them now! They just came out with a new album & I am L O V I N G it.  My boyfriend and I decided to review their new album A Moment Apart.  Because we can't spend a moment apart.  Hahaha JK.  But seriously, we're pretty into Odesza.

The first Odesza song I ever heard & fell in love with was Say My Name (feat. Zyra).  It is probably everyone's first fave.  And it is still such a good one!!!  Some other older favorites are Sun Models (feat. Madelyn Grant) + White Lies (feat. Jenni Potts) + All We Need (feat. Shy Girls) + I Want You...to name a few.

So I was pumped when I found out they were releasing a new album and even more excited after hearing their first two songs.  They released Line of Sight & Late Night back in April and we loved them right off the bat!  Not everyone did though.  They got some backlash for Line of Sight sounding similar to the Chainsmokers... Disagree.  How can you possibly compare Odesza to the Chainsmokers?!!!  These two songs are not alike in style which I think was a good preview for what was to come.  A Moment Apart is pretty diverse as far as genres.

So we went out & bought the vinyl & had a lil listening party.  The record is so dope!  The artwork is really colorful and if you're expecting to slide out a standard black vinyl you will be in for a little treat.  We definitely recommend Twist and Shout in Denver, if you're looking for a cool spot to buy records (2508 E Colfax Ave).

"Do you know the story of the Russian Cosmonaut"? This little excerpt they threw in (from the movie Another Earth) sounds like it was made specifically for the album.  When the intro transitions into A Moment Apart I thought my ears were going to fall off, I was so excited!    They transition perfectly.  Give it a listen, you'll practically fall off the edge of your seat!  The first track gets you moving & is the perfect start to the rest of the album!  Here we go!!!

Higher Ground (feat. Naomi Wild) lives up to their distinctive vibe with female vocals (that get stuck in your head) & deep + dance-y + upbeat sounds.  I honestly love all of their songs with female vocals!

Boy.  I feel like a lot of Odesza songs can go with whatever atmosphere you're in.  This song is a perfect example.  Depending on your surroundings this track could go from a bass heavy banger to a mellowed out (dare I say) chillstep vibe. It's as if their songs form to the overall mood of the room. "I could study to it or rip my shirt off at Red Rocks, you know?!" -Colin. This song is also a good one for that snowboarding playlist were about to break out soon!!

As I mentioned before, Line of Sight (feat. Wynne + Mansionair) is my favorite track of the album.  It's the kind of song that I play on repeat & sing too loud at stoplights.  Haha.   I love all the different layers of this one! That slow spacey start gives way to the hard hitting drums and before you know it you're dancing so hard in those heels you'll wish you chose Vans!

One of my boyfriend's faves is Late Night.  This song has more of a disco vibe with that signature crunchy baseline.   Once the hi-hat and the dreamy vocals creep in it all comes together!!  Another different feel from the duo and a tasty song, indeed!

La da da da da.... Across the Room (feat. Leon Bridges).  This song has a totally different vibe from the rest of the album.  Which I like!  Leon Bridges has a voice like velvet and the lyrics are that of a unique love song with an R&B/soul vibe.  And then it drops...  WOW!  It's like an explosion of "how did they do that"!? Sounds like it could have been taken from the library of Derek Vincent Smith or Nightmares on wax. Hip-Hop drums + The juicy Orchestral sample + That girl wailing those soul notes... Truly an amazing collaboration of different genres! Ya nailed another one, boys!

Meridan.  I feel like they really went back to their roots with this one.  As soon as the drums kick in you'll get what I'm saying.  This song flows so well and has a classic Odesza drop that leaves you thirsty for more.  With tribal vocal samples that seem to be from a different era and a baseline thats crunchiness sneaks up on you, this song could make a rock dance!  Definitely one of our favorites!

Everything at Your Feet (feat. The Chamanas) has some heavy trumpet and spanish lyrics.  It's different with the Chamanas vocals but they make it funky!!

The only song I'm not a fan of is Just a Memory (feat. Regina Spektor).  It is just not my fave.  It's repetitive and kinda like okay we get it.  A bit weepy.  But hey, that's just my opinion!!

Divide (feat. Kelsey Bulkin) -  Mellow with pretty female vocals. Is that you Janet Jackson?!

Thin Floors and Tall Ceilings is more of a slow and ambient vibe.  I like the title!  There aren't lyrics to this dreamy tune which makes me wonder why they picked this particular title.  I'll have to ask them next time we hang out.  ;)

La Ciudad clearly means the city.  Duh.  Obviously I know that because I took three years of Spanish in high school. These groovy drums will snap you right out of the dreamy state Thin Floors put you in. It's more upbeat for sure but, I wouldn't necessarily say it has a Spanish vibe, mis amigos!

"It's gonna be alriiiiight, I'm never gonna leave your siiiiide"  - Falls (feat. Sasha Sloan).  I like the lyrics and the high pitched vocal samples at the drop really make the song. Eric, our friend, can't get enough of it!

Show Me.  This one left me kinda like hmmm, don't really know what to say.  I don't not like it, but I don't love it either.  Neutral.  I do like that rolling bass synth though, definitely keeps you interested until the high pitched synths come in with more of those fun vocal samples. Its down tempo for sure, but that doesn't mean you can't groove to it!

I think that Corners of the Earth (feat. Ry X) was last for a reason. It's as if this song goes back and touches on all the highlights of the album. Its as if you were that Russian Cosmonaut stranded in space. Did you fall in love with the sound??

I am by no means a music expert lol.  My boyfriend, Colin, is much more musically inclined.   Overall, I love the album and have some for sure favorites!!  I just read that A Moment Apart just hit #3 on the Billboard Top 200!  YEAHHH!!!!

We paired Yamazaki 12 year with this album.  This single malt Japanese Whisky is perfection - its bold + balanced + slightly peaty.  Pour a dram & press play!

What are your thoughts on Odesza's new album?!  Favorite tracks!?  I'd LOVE to hear!!!
